Understanding Obscuration

Five levels of privacy

Every pattern is graded from 1 to 5, from a subtle, barely-there texture that keeps the view, to a heavily obscuring finish that gives complete privacy. The higher the number, the less you can see through it.

Where It Works Best

Privacy for every room

Obscure glass is most at home wherever you want light without a clear view, in or out. Here's where our customers use it most, and the privacy levels we usually recommend.

Bathrooms & en-suites

The classic use, full privacy at the window while daylight still pours in over the bath or basin.

Recommended: Level 4-5
Front doors & sidelights

Let light into the hallway while keeping the entrance private and secure, pairs beautifully with composite doors.

Recommended: Level 3-5
Stairwells & landings

Half-landing windows are often overlooked from the side, obscure glass keeps them bright but private.

Recommended: Level 3-4
Overlooked ground floor

Rooms facing the street or a neighbour's window stay private without permanently drawn blinds.

Recommended: Level 4-5
Internal partitions

Borrow light between rooms, a glazed partition or door that shares daylight without sharing the view.

Recommended: Level 2-4
Decorative feature

A subtle Level 1-2 texture adds character to a plain window without sacrificing the view beyond.

Recommended: Level 1-2

Safety glass where it matters

Building Regulations require toughened or laminated safety glass in and around doors, and in low-level glazing, typically any pane within 800mm of the floor, or within 300mm of a door and below 1500mm. Every obscure pattern we supply is available in a safety specification, and our surveyor will confirm exactly what each opening needs.
